Garmin just keeps rolling out new features. I’m currently testing the trucker-friendly Garmin dezl 560LMT and came across what Garmin is calling Exit Services, similar to Magellan’s Exit POIs – a very useful feature indeed. Basically, it displays points of interest (POIs) for the next 10 exits or so, when travelling on limited access highways. I’ll be surprised if this feature doesn’t show up in the next generation of nuvis.

Android PNDs coming?
DigiTimes has a brief article up today, citing several GPS navigator (PND) trends for 2011. Among them…
While most PNDs are based on Linux or Windows CE, some vendors are developing Android models to minimize R&D costs, and to leverage the availability of Android-based applications and connectivity with tablet PCs, handsets and other hand-held devices, the sources analyzed.
Garmin Trailhead series–AT & PCT
Garmin has rolled out a new 24K topo map collection, the Trailhead Series, starting with two titles — the Appalachian Trail (AT) and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)
. No word yet on the Continental Divide Trail (CDT), which isn’t as well mapped, so its arrival may not be imminent.
Garmin Approach S1
The Garmin Approach S1 is a sportswatch style GPS for golf, giving you basic stats such as precise yardages to the front, back and middle of greens. It comes with over 15,000 preloaded courses for the US and Canada.
Magellan RoadMate 9055 review
Hands on with the 7” Magellan RoadMate 9055
The Magellan RoadMate 9055 is one of several models offered by Magellan with a gigantic 7” screen, making it a good option for truckers and RVs. It comes with preloaded maps of the US and Canada, Bluetooth for hands free calling and lifetime traffic.
Garmin Forerunner 410
UPDATE: Check out the Forerunner 610, whose touchscreen interface eliminates the touch bezel problems found on the 400 series.
UPDATE 2: This model has been discontinued. For a list of current models, see our GPS for runners page.
The Garmin Forerunner 410 is a GPS sportswatch for runners that updates the Forerunner 405 and 405CX with a second-generation touch bezel that works better under sweaty conditions. It’s the top of the line runners watch from Garmin, at least in terms of ones with this stylish form factor, and is sold both with and without a heart rate monitor.
Garmin rolls out driving recorder in nuvi 2575R
Thanks to the FCC, we’ve got a sneak peek at the Garmin nuvi 2575R, a forthcoming model that offers a driving recorder, so you can capture the crash on film when you’re watching the big game. Which you can do because the 2575/2575R includes a TV receiver! And of course that means that this device is probably not heading to the US market, especially since the manual says it’s an analog TV receiver and they spell it “analogue.”
Garmin Approach G3
The Garmin Approach G3 is a smaller version of Garmin’s Approach G5. The G3 GPS for golf comes with over 15,000 courses preloaded for the US and North America, and that list continues to be updated. Like the G5, it allows you to measure individual shot distances and show the exact yardage to fairways, hazards and greens.
NASA on GPS jamming and LightSquared
I recently came across a GPS jamming white paper (PDF) from NASA’s Space-Based Positioning Navigation & Timing (PNT) Advisory Board, which led me to other interesting documents on LightSquared, but let’s focus first on their anti-jamming recommendations, which I’ve summarized here…
No such thing as a GPS implant
Journalists continue to be snookered by already debunked hoaxes, and perhaps a few too many nights watching Dollhouse. The latest one proclaims that:
Tiny GPS microchips with your personal info can be slipped under your skin, leaving you lighter, ID tossed in the shredder.
