GPS blamed for drowning – do navigators make us oblivious to signs?

GPS drowning

When I first saw this story I thought, GPS gets blamed again, when the real culprit is inattention to signs. But I have to ask, does GPS lull us into not looking at road signs? The incident in question occurred when a UK woman drove her husband and their pet across a ford, which was clearly marked as hazardous during flooding. The crossing has since been closed off. read more

Recovering speed data from your Garmin nuvi

Using GPS for speeding tickets

Feel like you got an unjust speeding ticket? Your GPS may or may not get you out of it. But it is fairly easy to recover speed data from a Garmin nuvi. Here’s what you need to do…

Consumer Reports disses TomTom mounts

TomTom ring mount

Ouch! Consumer Reports has posted an article that is very critical of some of TomTom’s integrated mounts. I’m not sure they are being entirely fair though. With the exception of the START series, they are criticizing mounts from discontinued units. read more

Eighteen months after a man left his wife and their stranded van, with only an auto GPS to guide him back to civilization, hunters have found his body in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest near Mountain City, Nevada (location map above), close to the Idaho state line.

Truckers hitting bridges; Senator wants to regulate GPS

Bridge truck strike

New York Senator Charles Schumer says too many trucks and buses are hitting bridges and that the government should do something about it. He may want to talk to Apple; they seem to be finding out that the mapping business is pretty complicated. Seriously, there are always going to be map errors, but perhaps it should be illegal for truckers and bus drivers to use consumer GPS, as opposed to a device that at least attempts to consider height and other restrictions. read more

Hands on review of the TomTom VIA 1605TM

The TomTom VIA 1605TM is an unusual size; it’s the first 6″ navigator that I’m aware of. TomTom seems to be investigating a new sweet spot, between the 5″ models which have come to dominate our rankings and the 7″ behemoths Magellan is hawking to the truck and RV crowd.  read more

7″ Garmin dezl 760 offers truckers big screen and active lane guidance

UPDATE: Read our Garmin dezl 760LMT review page.

As I predicted, Garmin has chosen not to cede the 7″ truck/RV market to Magellan, as they have just announced the Garmin dezl 760. Updating the dezl 560 series, this behemoth offers more than just a big screen. Like recent nuvis, it can utilize Smartphone Link to send all sorts of data to the unit from an Android smartphone, such as weather, fuel prices and traffic camera images. read more

Magellan RoadMate 5230T-LM review

Hands on review of the Magellan RoadMate 5230T-LM

The Magellan RoadMate 5230T-LM is a new (mid-2012) high-end navigator with a 5″ touchscreen, featuring Landmark Guidance. This will give you instructions like “turn left at McDonald’s on Highway 112” instead of just “turn left on Highway 112.” It also offers lifetime map updates and live traffic, along with a year’s subscription to traffic camera alerts. About the only missing features are Bluetooth and voice command. read more

Magellan tackles fleet management

One of the few chances PND manufacturers have of surviving these days to is diversify into the ever-expanding niche of opportunities that GPS continues to bring. Fleet management has long been the domain of small companies, but just like Garmin and TomTom before them, Magellan is now jumping into the game too. read more
