On being an early adopter

I am an early adopter. Having owned many Garmin GPS receivers in the past, I find myself eager to experience the new features and functions included with each new hardware release. Around the first of each month, we take a look back to see which models our readers have bought over the past month. The rankings below are based on the number of units sold on GPS Tracklog through our various partners like Amazon and REI. On the auto side, the Garmin nuvi 40LM and 50LM shared top billing, while the Oregon 450 returned to the top spot on the handheld list. I’ll also note the appearance of some recently released models – the Garmin nuvi 2597LMT and the Oregon 600 (I hope to have one of the latter in hand in the next day or two). On to the charts…

UPDATE: I’m now seeing multiple reports that authorities used the Mercedes mbrace system to track the vehicle.

Remember the Mercedes that the Boston Marathon bombers carjacked? Turns out that the police tracked it using GPS after the carjacking victim managed to escape and alert authorities. read more

Feds issue distracted driving guidelines for built-in navigation

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released voluntary guidelines for the auto industry, to limit the distracted driving risks from built-in navigation, communications and entertainment systems. While the guidelines are voluntary, they are expected to be widely implement. read more

It looks like REI.com has beaten everyone to the punch, and is now shipping the Garmin Oregon 600 and 600t. GPS City anticipates having them next week; Amazon usually lags a few weeks behind these guys. A lot of folks seem to be excited about these new models; perhaps you can see why in my post on the Oregon 600 series.
