Garmin GPSMAP 78s review

Hands on with the Garmin GPSMAP 78s

The Garmin GPSMAP 78s brings the first major update to the GPSMAP handheld line in over four years. The reason for it taking so long is that Garmin had a huge hit with the 60/76 series, and instead of messing with a winner, they turned their attention to new interfaces, which were introduced on the Colorado series, followed by the touch screen Oregon line. These new units brought the ability to add custom maps and aerial imagery, paperless geocaching, and high-resolution screens, but the latter made them less than bright (although the latest model, the Oregon 450, has largely solved this problem).

But patience has its rewards and Garmin did well not to rush things. With the 78 (and the forthcoming 62 series, which shares the same interface), Garmin has married the best features of the 60/76 models, with many of the advantages of the Oregon line. TomTom XXL 550TM review

The TomTom XXL 550TM is a 5” widescreen unit in the XXL 550 series, and is the first 5” model to incorporate their new new EasyMenu, which debuted in the US on the TomTom EASE. The TM stands for lifetime traffic and maps; the 550 is also available in a base edition, and ones with just lifetime traffic or maps.

The 550 series includes preloaded maps of the US, Canada and Mexico, along with over 7 million points of interest (POIs). Additionally, you’ll get Advanced Lane Guidance, IQ Routes, Map Share and the EasyPort mount. I’ll go over those features in detail, but first let’s look at some other closely…

The Garmin nüvi 295W is the first nuvi to include WiFi, giving you Internet and email access on the go – well, as long as you’re in range of a WiFi hotspot. At a sure to be discounted list price of $279.99, the 295W looks like a pretty good solution for someone who would like a smartphone, but doesn’t want to shell out $30 a month for a data plan.

Lowrance Endura Out&Back review

This review was written by Troy Bryan, AKA StarBrand on geocaching.com’s Groundspeak forums. My initial review of the Lowrance Endura Sierra wasn’t exactly glowing, so after seeing positive reports about recent firmware updates, I asked Troy if he’d post a review of his Out&Back.

I got my Lowrance Endura Out&Back just 1 day before my big summer 2009 vacation to Minnesota last August. I had been eagerly awaiting this unit after reading the specs and preordering the unit in Late May. The many delays in shipping were frustrating but I was interested in seeing what this offering could do. After opening the package and briefly reading through the included guide , I was almost immediately disappointed with several aspects of the unit. Dim screen, a bit awkward in size and quirky behavior loading up a few PQs. I dumped it my caching bag with my Oregon 200 and Colorado 300 and took it with me to give it a good workout anyway.

Garmin Forerunner 110

The Garmin Forerunner 110 is a new entry-level version of Garmin’s popular GPS fitness / sports watch. It has a simplified menu and drops the touch-bezel interface of recent models, replacing them with four large buttons. It’s available with or without a heart-rate monitor and comes in several colors – Men’s red, Women’s pink or Unisex.
