The latest update to the geocaching-centric Magellan eXplorist GC has given it the ability to accept National Geographic Topo and Digital Globe aerial imagery content. The GC has no expansion slot, but does have 500MB of memory available for added maps, etc. This doesn’t turn the GC into a great hiking unit, as I believe it still lacks some significant navigation features, but it should expand its capabilities for both urban and backcountry geocachers. read more

Rand McNally enters handheld GPS market with Foris 850
Well this is a surprise. Rand McNally has just announced their first handheld GPS, the Foris 850. The Foris is a result of a partnership with Falk Navigation, a European manufacturer. The Foris 850 appears to be based on their Lux 22 model. read more
Garmin Approach S2 golf GPS announced

The Garmin Approach S2 is being announced this morning, the third wrist-top golf GPS by the company. A mid-range unit, the same size and shape as the Approach S1, the S2 adds a digital scorecard and scorecard review. read more
GPS tracking of guns
Ever since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, I’ve been seeing proposals calling for GPS tracking for guns. I don’t really see how this would work, since GPS tracking systems require a power source and a transmitter. read more

Garmin’s Android strategy
When Garmin and Asus ended their ill-fated nuvifone partnership, Garmin gave Asus an exclusive for any preloaded navigation apps through the end of 2012. Because of this, quite a few Garmin watchers expect an announcement of a Garmin navigation app for Android early this year. But that may not happen. read more
Garmin quatix marine watch unveiled
Garmin has a history of using existing hardware platforms for multiple market segments, as seen in the Approach golf series use of the Dakota, Oregon and Edge hardware. They now appear to have taken the fenix backcountry sportswatch platform and repurposed it as a marine watch – the Garmin quatix, announced this morning. read more
