The Magellan eXplorist 350H for hunters
Magellan has announced a new hunting handheld, the Magellan eXplorist 350H, which appears to be based on the eXplorist 310. The 350H offers preloaded 1:100,000 scale topo maps with game management units (GMUs), GMU geofences, hunting specific waypoints (shown above), and comes with a one-year subscription to satellite imagery. read more
Garmin has discontinued more auto units, including the connected nuLink 1695
With the announcement of the 2013 nuvi series, we were expecting Garmin to move more models to the discontinued list. That has indeed happened; in addition to several 14xx series models, they’ve also pulled the plug on the nuLink 1695, and most 2xx0 and 37xx models. It’s no secret that GPS manufacturers are trying to figure out how to respond to the threat of smartphones. One way is to embrace them, giving us a large screen navigation device while using the smartphone for connectivity. We saw that last year with Garmin’s Smartphone Link app, which unfortunately remains Android only, leaving iPhone users out in the cold. Today Magellan has stepped into the fray with the Magellan SmartGPS, which can utilize a free companion iOS and Android app to bring all sorts of info to this 5″ navigator. The app will also allow for advanced route planning from your smartphone or tablet. read more
