Can Garmin really introduce 15 new models and at the same time simplify the nuvi line? That’s what they appear to be trying to do. Taking a page from Navigon, their recent acquisition, Garmin is rolling out three new series, the Prestige, Advanced and Essential lines. And while we don’t have an estimated street date, they are referring to these as their 2012 line. UPDATE: The product pages are showing a fourth quarter availability date.

The Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM is a new unit from Magellan, whose most notable feature is WiFi, so I’ll focus on that in my review. It has a 5” screen with accelerometer, allowing you to use it in landscape or portrait orientation. And as the T-LM implies, it comes with traffic and lifetime map updates.

  • No sign-in required
  • No web browser required
  • Advanced options let you specify download speed and schedules

Magellan intros backup camera for RoadMate 1700 and 9055

Magellan_BackUpCamera_HRMagellan has announced their backup camera, as previously promised for their RoadMate 9055 and 1700 models. It isn’t showing up on Amazon yet, but should be there soon. As you can see above, the camera attaches at the top or bottom of the license plate and transmits wirelessly to the aforementioned 7” models. The camera provides a 120-degree view and is waterproof and dustproof to IPX67 standards, while the transmitter is water resistant to IPX4. MSRP is $149.99.

Women drive SUV into water, blame GPS

SUV in Mercer SloughIn a case reminiscent of an episode of The Office, Three Mexican women in Bellevue, Washington for a meeting, drove their rental SUV into Mercer Slough, and have apparently blamed GPS for their trouble. In an aerial photo of what appears to be the boat ramp in question, I can see what may have been an old road bed on the other side of the Slough, but the road doesn’t show up on ether NAVTEQ or TeleAtlas maps, so I have my doubts.
