Garmin nuvi 1100
UPDATE: This model has been discontinued. For current recommendations, please refer to our auto GPS buyers guide.
The Garmin nuvi 1100 is an entry-level model we first learned about in May 2010. Primarily available from Walmart.com
, the 1100 is basically a nuvi 1200 minus text-to-speech, so you’ll just hear “turn right in 1/4 mile” instead of “turn right on Oak Street in 1/4 mile.”
Like the 1200, the nuvi 1100 has a 3.5” touch screen and maps of the U.S. with the exception of Alaska. All of the units in the 1xxx series come with customizable data fields and the ability to utilize the pedestrian and mass transit features of Garmin’s CityXplorer maps.
TomTom VIA 1505TM

WiFi Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM emerges
UPDATE: Read my hands on review of the Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM.
If Garmin won’t follow up on the success of their WiFi-enabled nuvi 295W, Magellan certainly will. That’s right, the new Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM offers WiFi and a Web browser. Besides that, you’ll get the ability to switch between portrait and landscape modes, a 5” screen, lifetime map updates and traffic, and a new feature called Tour Director. The latter presumes to know how long the kids will want to stay at Disneyland! MSRP is $299.99; we don’t have any word on availability but we’re betting it will be hitting store shelves soon. Garmin nuLink! 2390 appears US bound
The Garmin nuLink! 2390, announced for Europe last week, has shown up on the FCC website. Now normally that wouldn’t get me too excited, since its fairly common for EU-bound models to run that gauntlet. What did get my attention was the nuLink 2390 showing up on Garmin’s US website, along with a SKU (010-00919-06) for a “nuLink! 2390, GPS, USA, GPRS.”
Four new Magellan RoadMates with lifetime maps
Magellan has quietly rolled out several new RoadMates with lifetime map updates, making a big deal out of only one of them, the RoadMate 9055-LM, which appears to be their new top of the line 7” model. Most are just beginning to hit the market. One other item of note – the 2136T-LM is the first Magellan to display speed limits, which are “optionally displayed with or without warnings.” No word on whether it can be customized for the warnings to go off when you exceed the speed limit by a configurable amount.
Garmin nuLink gets live traffic cams in Europe
Looks like Garmin is pulling a TomTom, rolling out cool new features on the other side of the pond while leaving US commuters stuck in traffic. The nuLink 2300 series, announced today, brings European motorists PhotoLive cameras and 3D traffic.
Garmin nuvi 2350LT
The Garmin nüvi 2350LT is one of the recently released models in Garmin’s 2300 series, which brings the best features from the 3700 series, minus the exorbitant price tag. They include a historical road speed database for improved routing and the ability to learn your preferred routes over time.
Sneak peek at the WiFi-enabled Magellan RoadMate 5175
UPDATE: Read my hands on review of the Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM.
Hey, look what showed up on the FCC website this morning – a WiFi-enabled Magellan RoadMate 5175 series. We don’t have a lot of specs at this point, but we can tell you that it rotates into portrait or landscape orientations, and that it will come in traffic (5175T) and traffic plus lifetime map (5175T-LM) editions.
