TomTom VIA series announced for US

TomTom VIA series

UPDATE: Read my hands on review of the TomTom VIA 1535TM. I’ve also posted resource pages with links to reviews for the VIA 1405TM, 1435TM, 1505M and 1505TM.

TomTom is brining its VIA series to the US, a mid-range successor to the XL and XXL product lines. Already available in Europe, the VIA series features a new hardware design, with an integrated (inseparable) Easy Port mount, resulting in a thinner, more pocketable profile. The series will feature the new Webkit-based interface found on the GO 2000 line. Also notable – some models will be the first mid-range, non-GO units to feature Bluetooth and voice command. What you won’t find on the VIA series is the 2500’s capacitive touch screen or HD Traffic.

Hands on with the TomTom GO 2505TM

UPDATE: This model has been discontinued. For a list of current TomTom models and their features, please see our TomTom comparison chart.

The TomTom GO 2505TM is the top of the line model in the new GO 2×05 series, which represents the most significant refresh I’ve seen since the first TomTom I ever used, a GO 300. The big changes are the new Webkit-based interface, a capacitive touch screen and a new magnetic mount.

The 2505TM has a 5” screen and includes Bluetooth for hands-free cell phone use, as well as lifetime map updates and lifetime traffic.

TomTom XL 335SE–Black Friday star?

TomTom XL 335SE

UPDATE: I’ve confirmed that the XL 335SE is exclusive to Walmart, Walmart Canada and Walmart.com.

Walmart has let their Black Friday ad leak, and they have a special edition navigator in the line up, the TomTom XL 335SE for $79 (that link goes to a refurbished one, though they should have new ones up by sometime next week). They will also have the TomTom EASE for $59, but since that one is better known, I want to focus on what to expect with the XL 335SE.

TomTom eases in expanded feature set

TomTom XXL 550 Owners of some TomTom units with the EASE interface (XL 350 series, XL 550 series and XL 335 LE, LM & SE models, but apparently not the EASE itself) might want to connect their units to the TomTom HOME app on their computers. A new firmware update will add the following features:
