Magellan SmartGPS with a couple of “squares” showing

It’s no secret that GPS manufacturers are trying to figure out how to respond to the threat of smartphones. One way is to embrace them, giving us a large screen navigation device while using the smartphone for connectivity. We saw that last year with Garmin’s Smartphone Link app, which unfortunately remains Android only, leaving iPhone users out in the cold. Today Magellan has stepped into the fray with the Magellan SmartGPS, which can utilize a free companion iOS and Android app to bring all sorts of info to this 5″ navigator. The app will also allow for advanced route planning from your smartphone or tablet. read more
Garmin nüvi Advanced Series showing new slide-in Up Ahead feature

Garmin is announcing their 2013 nuvi series today, with new additions to their Essential, Advanced and Prestige series. New to the nuvi line is a high-end unit with a magnetic mount, a couple of 7″ models, interface changes and new features including Real Directions, active lane guidance, and voice-activated traffic. Garmin Edge 810 and 510 GPS cyclometers
Garmin has announced two new cycling devices, the Edge 510 and Edge 810, featuring real-time connectivity for live tracking, social media sharing and weather updates. Also announced this morning was the new Garmin Connect mobile app. read more
NYC has the most speed traps and enforcement cameras in the US

BluTracker Bluetooth 4.0 GPS tracking app
This is interesting – a GPS tracking device that uses Bluetooth to report it’s location. Surprisingly, it’s got a 1/2 mile range! It uses Bluetooth 4.0 (AKA Bluetooth LE), so it may not be compatible with your current phone, but that’s okay because it isn’t out yet. Still, there’s enough of interest to warrant discussing it, and the company has a good track record of bringing products to market. read more
Even though it’s been around for several years, Garmin’s free BaseCamp program continues to befuddle folks. But with the discontinuation of MapSource, more of you are braving the waters.
