GPS reception myths and misconceptions

An interview with TeleNav’s Bob Rennard

Bob-RennardMost of us have had times when GPS reception was challenging, and it’s easy to make a leap in logic and blame it on current environmental conditions. Today, I’m happy to say that Bob Rennard, TeleNav co-founder and Chief Technical Officer, has agreed to tackle these issues head on in an interview with GPS Tracklog. So lets see if we can clear up some GPS reception myths and misconceptions…

Bob, can you tell our readers a bit about your background and what role you played in the development of GPS?

GPS chip in boot guides air strike of guerilla camp

Mono_jojoy_-_EEUUA pair of GPS-chipped boots has helped Colombian military forces destroy a Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) camp, killing 20 rebels and second in command “Mono Jojoy” (pictured at left). Suffering from diabetes and subsequent foot problems, the leader had ordered a pair of custom boots made. When a communication was intercepted, the Colombian military intervened, managing to insert the GPS chip into the boots.

My point in posting this story is to delve into the technology involved. I’ve already been contacted by one mainstream media reporter, asking if this is plausible. In a word, yes. GPS chips are very small and transmitting location is not a huge technological feat. Remote monitoring is the challenge, due to two aspects:

DeLorme PN-60w / SPOT deal and testing update

DeLorme PN-60w SPOT

UPDATE: I have reason to believe that this deal may be gone by tomorrow. I suspect that DeLorme may have saddled dealers with a minimum resale price, though that is purely conjecture on my part.

UPDATE 2: Hmm, the deal is still there as of 9/22. Maybe I got bad info. The page now says the rebate is in effect through 9/25.

UPDATE 3: Looks like its now priced at $449.00.

UPDATE 4: I’ve posted reviews of the DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w and the PN-60w / SPOT Communicator combo

J&R Computer/Music World has the DeLorme Earthmate PN-60W Handheld GPS with SPOT Satellite Communicator on sale for $399.95 with free shipping, $90 less than Amazon’s price this morning. This is an amazing deal for a just released product that allows you to text friends, send an SOS, or post to Twitter or Facebook where there is no cell reception.

Update on Garmin GPSMAP 62 series performance

Garmin-62s-tracklog When I reviewed the Garmin GPSMAP 62s, I gave it a tentative recommendation because I needed to run beta firmware to get accurate tracklogs. Since then, I’ve been testing the 62 series with the 2.50 (non-beta) firmware and, as promised, I’m updating my recommendations.

LMT, nuLink and the nu Garmins

UPDATE: LM and LMT pages on GPS Tracklog:

It’s been a few days since a batch of nu Garmins were announced, and I finally have some details for you. Let’s start off with a quick look at some nu Garmin marketing jargon.

An abbreviated look at LMTs

Garmin has apparently dropped the LMU (lifetime maps updates) designation, in favor of LTs (lifetime traffic), LMs (lifetime maps) and LMTs (lifetime maps and traffic). Hopefully, this will avoid any confusion with TomTom’s TM units, which stands for lifetime traffic and maps (though I wonder how many people think it means trademark).
